How to Transition to a More Exciting Career

One of the most common questions people ask me during readings is how they can transition out of their current career and onto a career path that’s more exciting.

Oftentimes people aren’t even sure what that path is, they just know they are not happy in the job they have.

So they ask their guides to tell them what path to take that will bring them happiness.

It’s a good question to ask your guides!

If you are not having a reading with an intuitive counselor though, is there any way to determine for yourself what career path you should take?

Here are some ways to help you discover the career path that’s right for you.

What Used to Make You Happy?

Think back on your childhood and teenage years. Before you had to work for a living, what activities would you engage in that were fun and made you happy?

Chances are you had to stop doing some of them in order to get a “real job” when you graduated. But your childhood activities can clue you in to a career you’re passionate about.

For example I had a client once and asked her what she loved doing as a child.

She said she loved playing with Barbie dolls but couldn’t see how that applied to her adult life.

So I asked her, “What was it about playing with the dolls that you loved the most?”

She replied, “I loved picking out just the right clothes for her and styling her hair. Sometimes I even made clothes for her. That was when it was really fun.”

As it turns out, this client loved fashion, and even as an adult she loved concocting and creating unique styles with clothes she found at thrift stores. We talked about her going into fashion design and we even talked about her creating clothing for dolls and dogs and cats. She was thrilled with the idea.

What Have You Always Dreamed of Doing?

Remember when you were a child and someone asked you what you wanted to be when you grew up? Do you remember what you used to tell people?

Perhaps there’s a clue in there.

When I was a child I wanted to grow up to become a teacher or a therapist. When I entered college it was as a psychology major. I got my Bachelor’s degree and headed to graduate school. Along the way, my plans altered and I never finished.

Fast forward a decade or so and I became an intuitive counselor and a spiritual teacher. I help people understand esoteric concepts and I counsel people who are having life crises and need guidance. I never would have predicted that that’s how my childhood goals would play out, but they did.

Look at something you’ve always dreamed of doing and see if you can find a way to realize it now.

What Do You Volunteer to Do Right Now?

If you have free time, do you spend it volunteering? Maybe you like making food for a women’s shelter, or building homes for the homeless. Perhaps you like knitting hats for newborns in the NICU, or teaching someone how to read.

Volunteering is a huge clue to a passionate career path. Whatever you are willing to do in your free time without being paid is something you love to do or you wouldn’t be doing it. See if you can connect up with a career path that allows you to be paid to do what you would be happy to do for free.

I had a client who loved teaching people how to meditate, so on weekends she would go to a park and invite people sit on blankets while she guided them through a meditation. Guess what she does for a living now? It’s not just on the weekends any longer. She opened a holistic practice and teaches meditation classes and does energy work on clients.

What Would You Do If You Knew You Couldn’t Fail?

This is my all-time favorite question to determine your course in life. Ask yourself what you would do if you knew you couldn’t fail.

Someone asked me this question when I was 23 years old. My reply was, “That’s easy, I’d be a writer.” And he said “Then write.”

I was so “deer in the headlights” when he said that. My thought process was, “Wait, can I be a writer? Is that even possible? I never even considered it, but it’s true, I would absolutely love to be a fiction writer.”

So I quit my job within one week’s time and I went home and wrote my first novel in 16 days. It wasn’t difficult to write it at all. The story just channeled its way through me. But I didn’t know anything about getting published and my book never saw the light of day.

Fast forward a couple of decades and I’ve written and published 3 books and about 1000 articles on the topics I love to write about.

You are not stuck on the path you are on. Even if the job you have is paying the bills and you have no idea how to replace that level of income, you can still get started. You can start doing something on the side, or in the evenings, or on weekends. You don’t know what it can turn into over time.

I’ve seen hundreds of clients transition into a career path they love with all their heart. You can too!
