In my dream last night I was dining with the Devil. He took me to this fancy restaurant. We had crab cakes; best I’ve ever had. No one in the entire restaurant could even see us, except this one server who kept refilling my water glass.
“Why did you bring me here?” I asked him.
He wore a tailored white suit with a black button down shirt and a red tie. His watch looked like a Rolex. How cliche.
“To explain some things you need to know,” he replied as he took a sip of his wine. He paused for a moment to savor it.
“Really?” I asked. “I can’t wait to hear it. What do I need to know?”
“I’m not the bad guy.”
“Right. That’s what bad guys say when they’re about to justify their actions,” I said.
He smiled and said, “Hear me out. Please.”
I expected him to be disfigured in some way, to exude evil, but he was ruggedly handsome, and at that moment he seemed remarkably human. My guard was up, but how often do you get to chat with the Devil? I have to admit, I was intrigued to hear his story.
“Go on,” I said.
He smiled. “As I said, I’m not the bad guy. I am a caretaker.”
“A caretaker?” I asked. “Of what? Human misery?”
A patient smile formed on his lips. “No. I am the caretaker of this creation.”
“I thought God was the caretaker. Of our souls, our world, our paths.”
“No,” he said with a slight shake of his head. “God created the garden but I tend it. God created the playground for you to play in, but I am the one who watches over you all. God gave you the gift of life, but I’m the one who manifests your experiences.”
“What do you mean? You’re the one who decides if someone gets a good life or a bad life?” I asked.
He picked up his wine glass, staring deep into the red depths. His eyes looked faraway for a moment and then he was back.
“No, I grant wishes.”
“So you’re saying people wish for tragedy? They wish for war? Surely you’re not suggesting they wish for cancer!” I said, loudly. No one else in the restaurant reacted. I remembered they couldn’t see us.
He leaned in close to me. “Oh but they do, Erin. Humans have free will and they have free reign. By their actions, by their vibrations, by their desires, they create their own experiences. I’m just the one who makes sure they get what they’re asking for.”
“But, I mean… People want love, and joy, and peace.”
He leaned back in his seat. “Yes, they do. And they are granted that as well.”
“Then why isn’t the world a better place if there are so many people wishing for good and positive outcomes?” I queried.
He said, “Because there are so many more people wishing for tragedy.”
“I don’t know anyone who wishes for tragedy and ill fortune.” I said.
“Oh but they do. By their vibration. Pain, sadness, loss, they are all distractions. You wouldn’t believe the number of people who are so afraid of their own power that they manifest distractions to prevent themselves from their own greatness. For example, how could you get on a stage and speak to 8,000 people about love if you’re too distracted by the cancer in your body? How could you travel the world bringing hope to those who have lost it when your bank account is so low you can’t buy bread?”
“And you cause all that to happen?” I said.
“No,” he replied. “People do. Like I said, I only grant wishes, I don’t determine what kind of wishes people make. What people don’t realize is that they are creating their own experience. But most people blame outside forces for their misfortunes. They don’t take responsibility for their actions and vibration.”
“Are you saying that little kids who are being abused are in vibrational alignment with being hurt?”
“No,” he said. “The person hurting them is in vibrational alignment with anger or fear and the child is unfortunately bearing the consequence. But the child then determines what happens to his or her vibration. Some come out of those situations with fear, anger, and a low sense of self worth, while others are able to see the pain in the person who hurt them and walk in compassion, perhaps even helping others. It’s all about contrast.”
“What do you mean?”
“Contrast is everything. Contrast provides you the vision to change your vibration. Sometimes people need to experience the pain to understand the pleasure. They need to know what they DON’T want in order to remember what they DO want. There are millions of people out there who manifested a bad break or a tragedy and are now better off for it.”
He paused and I didn’t know what to say. I knew of countless stories of people rising from the ashes of misfortune.
I looked around the restaurant for a moment. I saw couples having a romantic dinner. I also saw couples who were straining to connect with one another. I saw people sitting in silence, and people arguing. They were all experiencing their lives differently.
I looked back at the Devil. He sat patiently as I processed this information. I opened myself up intuitively because I wanted to really see him, to see his true essence.
He smiled knowingly and said, “Yes, look at me. I have nothing to hide.”
When I searched his energy I saw several things. Fortitude and inner strength. That’s so he can do this job, I thought. I saw some sadness and regret, too.
“I may seem like a monster to most people, Erin, but I’m just doing the job God gave me. I am at the mercy of people’s wishes and desires. It’s difficult for me to bring people pain but I always hope they will turn their vibration around and seek the lighter, more joyful path. They are free to do so at any time.”
I had compassion for the Devil, for the job he had to do.
I said, “Why are you telling me all of this anyway?”
He said, “Because you can tell them. You can explain to people how important it is to set an intention and become a true vibrational match for it. You can help people understand that their lives can be anything they want them to be, and that their lives are everything they’re designing them to be. Tell them not to be afraid of their own power, tell them to step into their greatness, to help make the world a better place for everyone. Tell them not to ignore the plight of others but to help them find their way back to the light. The world can be anything you all make it. It can be a heaven or a hell.”
“I understand,” I said.
“When you wake up, remember what I’ve told you. Write it down. And tell them. Please.”
He snapped his fingers, dramatically, and I woke up in my bed, the experience fresh and clear in my mind. I began writing immediately.
